Smoking silencers Empty Smoking silencers

Posted about these on the blog a little while back- seen some cool stuff online, but I've yet to see any of these in person.

Looks like someone has (or a couple someones have) picked up on, formalized, and improved the old trick of putting some talc powder in the barrel of an airsoft gun to simulate smoke.

Silencer models are available for both airsoft guns (PFI Smoke Caps) and the Real Action Paintball models (Frostbite Silencers). I've been really interested in that .43cal MP5 replica marker that can eject casings, and with one of these attached... that could be a pretty nice prop. If only I had a bunch of extra money to spend, and some clients lining up to rent one.

There's videos of both of these up on YouTube (user name FightDesigner), for those who want to poke around. I've got some tagged under my favorites in YouTube, if you're interested. Sounds like they work best when firing actual bbs or paintballs, but can work at least some just from compressed air or gas.

A bunch of comments on the YouTube videos are complaining that the powder will gunk up the gearbox on AEGs so they won't work properly anymore. Anybody tried these yet and willing to comment?

Seems like on gas guns they'd be fine, at least.

Wonder if you couldn't rig up a valve of some sort to stop backflow...

I bought several of these thinking they looked cool. I put one on a gas blowback M4 I have and a gas MP5. They really give a neat effect. However, I did notice that they really left a lot of gunk in the barrel after a few uses. Not sure how cracked up I am about that.
I probably wouldn't use it on any high-end gun for fear that it might wreck something internally. It would be ok if you took limited shots and cleaned things thoroughly, I suppose.
I really want to put on in one of my RAP4's to check it out - shell ejection and "smoke" - that would look pretty cool.
